The Amalfi Coast Debrief

Clifftop Villages, Turquoise Water, and the Most Photographed Coastline in the World
Why Visit Now
The Amalfi Coast has always been a dream destination — but 2026 is proving to be an exceptional year to go. American bookings to the region are up 143% year over year, making it one of the fastest-growing destinations for U.S. travelers right now. And it's not hard to see why.
The 34-mile stretch of UNESCO World Heritage coastline in Italy's Campania region — dramatic cliffs tumbling into turquoise Mediterranean water, pastel villages stacked improbably on the hillsides, ferries weaving between Positano, Amalfi, and Ravello — is simply unlike anywhere else in the world. Add to that a new wave of standout hotel openings (more below), a reinvigorated food scene, and a stretch of perfect weather from late spring through early fall, and the timing has never been better.
For those who've always said "someday" — this is the year to make it happen.
Where to Stay
Accommodations on the Amalfi Coast run the gamut from legendary grand hotels to intimate cliffside hideaways. A few standouts across price tiers:
- Ultra-Luxury: Monastero Santa Rosa (Conca dei Marini) — a converted 17th-century monastery with arguably the most dramatic cliffside position on the coast, an infinity pool carved into the rock, and a Michelin-recognized restaurant. Caruso, A Belmond Hotel in Ravello, is another iconic choice — suspended above the sea with one of Italy's most celebrated infinity pools.
- Luxury: Palazzo Avino (Ravello) — the pink palazzo known for impeccable service, a private beach shuttle, and heated pool. Hotel Santa Caterina (Amalfi) — family-owned elegance with terraced gardens and direct beach access. The newly buzzed-about Borgo Sant'Andrea (Conca dei Marini) opened to acclaim for its private beach club and saltwater pool.
- Mid-Range: Hotel Marincanto (Positano) — a cliffside position with an infinity pool and Red Positano, the rooftop bar generating serious buzz in 2026. Hotel Miramare (Positano) — classic coastal glamour with sea views from every room.
A key planning note: the Amalfi Coast has no shortage of charming towns — Positano is the most iconic and international, Ravello is quieter and elevated, Amalfi is the most walkable. Where you base yourself shapes the entire feel of the trip, which is one of the most valuable conversations to have with a travel advisor before you book.
Getting There
There's no airport on the Amalfi Coast itself — here's how Americans typically get there:
- Fly into Naples (NAP): Naples Capodichino Airport is the closest international hub, roughly 40 miles from the coast. From Naples, a private transfer to Positano takes about 90 minutes; to Amalfi town, about 75 minutes. Most major transatlantic carriers connect through a European hub (Rome, London, Frankfurt) to reach Naples.
- Fly into Rome (FCO): Rome Fiumicino is Italy's largest airport with the most direct U.S. routes. From FCO, a high-speed Frecciarossa train reaches Naples in about 70 minutes, and onward connections by ferry, bus, or private transfer get you to the coast. Total travel time from FCO to the coast is roughly 3.5–4 hours — but many travelers use this as an opportunity to spend a night or two in Rome or Naples first.
The coast's narrow, winding roads are notoriously challenging to drive — a private transfer is strongly recommended over renting a car, especially for first-time visitors. Ferries between coastal towns are scenic, efficient, and the preferred way to hop between Positano, Amalfi, and Salerno once you're there.
