Oahu Debrief

Waikiki, North Shore, and the Island That Has Everything

Why Visit Now

Oahu is Hawaii's most versatile island — and for good reason. It's the one that delivers world-famous beaches and legendary surf, Pearl Harbor and the Punchbowl, the buzzing energy of Honolulu's dining and nightlife scene, and the wild, uncrowded beauty of the North Shore, all within a single island you can drive end to end in under two hours. It's the island that works for every kind of traveler, from families to honeymooners to solo adventurers.

2026 is a particularly strong year to visit. The Moana Surfrider — Waikiki's oldest and most iconic resort, celebrating its 125th anniversary — has just completed a full top-to-bottom renovation, emerging fresher than it's looked in decades. Celebrated Hawaii chef Alan Wong is opening a new restaurant at the Kahala Hotel & Resort in early 2026, signaling that Oahu's food scene continues to punch well above its weight. And new flight routes from carriers including Alaska Airlines and Southwest are making the island more accessible than ever from cities across the continental U.S.

Hawaii is also the rare domestic destination that genuinely feels like international travel — different time zone, different culture, different pace. It's the answer when someone wants something extraordinary without a passport.

Where to Stay

Waikiki is the center of gravity for most Oahu visits, but where you stay within it — or just outside it — shapes the whole experience:

  • Iconic Luxury: The Moana Surfrider, A Westin Resort & Spa is the sentimental favorite — the oldest hotel on Waikiki Beach, now freshly renovated for its 125th anniversary in 2026. Beachfront, historic, and full of charm. The Royal Hawaiian (the "Pink Palace of the Pacific") next door is equally legendary, with its signature coral-pink facade and prime beachfront position. Both are irreplaceable Waikiki experiences.
  • Contemporary Luxury: The Ritz-Carlton Residences Waikiki (and the nearby Ritz-Carlton Oahu, Turtle Bay on the North Shore) deliver the brand's signature polish in a Hawaii setting. For something more boutique and design-forward, ESPACIO The Jewel of Waikiki offers just nine ultra-luxurious suites with sweeping ocean views — the most intimate high-end option on the island.
  • Beyond Waikiki: The Kahala Hotel & Resort sits on a quiet, private beach about 10 minutes east of Waikiki — the choice for travelers who want luxury and seclusion without the strip's energy. It's a favorite for celebrities, dignitaries, and repeat Hawaii visitors who've graduated past Waikiki. Alan Wong's new 2026 restaurant here makes it even more compelling.
  • Mid-Range: The Renaissance Honolulu Hotel & Spa (opened 2023) and AC Hotel Honolulu offer sleek, modern alternatives to the classic resort model at more accessible price points. Both put you within easy reach of Waikiki without the beachfront premium.

One honest planning note: Hawaii hotel rates are meaningfully higher than comparable mainland destinations. Building your budget realistically — and knowing which properties justify the premium — is one of the most practical things a travel advisor helps with.

Getting There

All Oahu-bound flights land at Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL) in Honolulu, located about nine miles from Waikiki — a 20-minute taxi or rideshare ride. The airport is well-run and handles the traffic smoothly for its size.

Nonstop service to HNL is offered from a wide range of U.S. cities:

  • West Coast: Los Angeles (LAX), San Francisco (SFO), Seattle (SEA), San Diego (SAN), Portland (PDX), and others — all under six hours. This is the primary corridor for Hawaii travel and has the most frequent and competitive fares.
  • East Coast and Midwest: Nonstop service is available from Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW), Chicago (ORD), Atlanta (ATL), Boston (BOS), and New York (JFK) on American, United, and Delta. Flight times from the East Coast run approximately 10 to 11 hours nonstop. For Florida-based travelers, connecting through Dallas, Atlanta, or a West Coast hub is typical.
  • New in 2026: Alaska Airlines launched new nonstop service between Hollywood-Burbank (BUR) and Honolulu starting May 2026 — the first direct Burbank-Honolulu flight in over two decades. Southwest added a new Ontario, CA (ONT) to Honolulu route in June 2026, continuing its Hawaii expansion.

One important planning note: Hawaiian and Alaska Airlines dominate inter-island connections, so if you're planning to hop to Maui, Kauai, or the Big Island as part of the trip, building that into the itinerary early is worthwhile — and it's something your travel advisor can help sequence efficiently.

A Word From Your Travel Advisor

"Oahu is one of those destinations people often underestimate because they assume they already know what it is — just Waikiki and the beach. But the island has genuine depth: the history of Pearl Harbor, the surfing culture of the North Shore in winter, the food scene in Honolulu, the hiking trails with views that stop you cold. I love helping people build a trip that captures all of it."

As your Jaunt Around advisor, I can help you find the right hotel for your travel style and budget, route your trip efficiently across the island, and — if you want to make it a multi-island adventure — sequence Oahu with Maui, Kauai, or the Big Island into one seamless itinerary. Hawaii rewards good planning, and it's the kind of trip that tends to get better every time you do it right.
